As a photographer, I sometimes forget that simple photography techniques aren't common knowledge. So here are a few little tricks I have learned along the way when it comes to choosing a background for your flatlay photography.
Keep It Simple
Whether you are photographing your product for e-commerce or just photographing flatlays for Instagram, it is SO important to keep it simple. Too much noise going on in your photos can take away from the point you are trying to make. We created our Stiles to give simple texture in the background, but not take away from your products. Pick a Stile thats color doesn't clash too much from what you are photographing. Here are 3 examples:
Light products on a light background. Here we have light products on a plain white background. The backs of our Stiles are all clean white and can give you a super simple look when styling your photos. Since there isn't any texture on the background, shooting light products on a white background gives it a clean look.
Light products on a medium/dark background. Here we have light products on a medium/dark background. When you are photographing anything on a textured flatlay backdrop you need to make sure that with light products you choose a background that is dark enough to make it pop. We don't want to take away from the products or main point of the image with too much going on in the background.
Dark products on a light background. Here's an example of darker products on a light textured flatlay backdrop. This makes the products pop against the light backdrop, but adds a little detail with the tile texture. This Old White Tile is one of my favorites, since it adds just a little detail but doesn't take away from the shot.
